2020 has seemed like one long, arduous night.

Yet, morning is coming! A new day is on the horizon filled with brand new mercies and rekindled hope. It is now time to cast off the grievous cloak of despair and distress and be adorned with the garment of praise and rejoicing!

The sun is rising. The shadows of fear, anxiety and doubt are suddenly dissipating as the storm clouds roll away. It is time to arise and pursue the dream that your soul so desperately longs for. Discard your bedclothes of procrastination and doubt and fulfill your destiny!

The time is now. Leap forward in faith, nothing wavering. Command your spirit to be courageous and tenacious, persistent and unrelenting as you leap over walls and kick down doors of new opportunity.

Forge ahead. Let the pain, heartaches and disappointments of 2020 fuel your fire as you embark on amazing journeys and reach extraordinary milestones in the year ahead! “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” Romans 13:12 (AKJV).

What have you gained from your storm?

Have you ever endured a storm so long that you thought it would never end? Fighting to stand in the midst of harsh winds and torrential rains that left you feeling broken, shattered and torn apart? Thinking, How will I ever recover? Will life ever be the same?

The current pandemic may bring about similar feelings of fear and despair. You may be thinking, How long will we have to endure these high levels of panic and uncertainty? What does our future hold? Will life ever be the same? How will we come out of the storm? Will we be worse off than we were at the start? Will we be beaten and battered?
Torn and bruised?

According to experts, “A healthy tree is able to move (flex) in the wind,
which is exactly what prevents it from breaking apart during a storm.”

In the past few months, have you reaped any benefits of slowing down?
Even in the midst of the destructive and catastrophic hand of COVID-19, there are remnants of hope and victory. I’ve witnessed increased family time and healthier lifestyles as well as new hobbies being discovered and small businesses emerging.

What moves have you made to ensure that you and your family are at a better place coming out of the storm than you were going in?

Are you ever FULLY present?

As a principal, wife, mother, daughter, nana, sister and friend, I have been accused many times of not giving my undivided attention (usually my grandson is the one who will bluntly call it to my attention. lol). Most of the time my brain is “on 1,000” and I frequently label it “multi-tasking” but the bottom line is, I’m oftentimes not fully present. It’s not that I don’t want to be, but it is so difficult slowing my brain down in the middle of a task or after being in over-drive all day long.

Studies show that most people pay attention in the present moment only 50% of the time. Is your percentage better or worse? How often do you find yourself “engaging” with those you love while texting, gaming, browsing, working after hours or multi-tasking in some other way?

How can we improve in this very important area? Here are 4 strategies we use in Kindergarten that can help us adults as well:

*Body still-Stop what you’re doing. When people come into my office they are probably accustomed to me talking while typing, responding to an email or finishing up a task. This one will probably be the hardest for me.
*Eyes watching-Maintain eye contact. Keeping eye contact with the person you are talking to shows that you are actively listening and paying attention.
*Voice quiet-Don’t interrupt. Let the person finish their thoughts before you attempt to respond. This demonstrates that you value what is being said.
*Ears listening-Don’t let your thoughts wander. Embrace the moment. Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with those who are important to you.

Overcoming Unfruitful Thoughts

Have you ever had an unpleasant conversation, negative encounter or traumatic experience that you found yourself replaying over and over and over in your mind? How much anger, anxiety and stress does this unproductive habit cause? Why do we subject ourselves to such agony?

With the recent passing of our daughter, my thoughts have been thoroughly consumed with “what ifs,” “only ifs,” “whys,” and “why nots.” Last week, I felt myself once again slipping into an abyss of overwhelming grief as I entertained these thoughts hour after hour, minute after minute, day in and day out. I finally asked myself- is this what my life will be now? A constant replay of my deepest pain? A continuous reliving of my darkest hour?

It was in that moment that I decided that I must take control of my thoughts. That meant making a conscious decision not to hit the play button on the horror story I’ve been living since March 2nd. In that moment, I had to decide that I would make an intentional, disciplined effort not to repeatedly press rewind while going through the motions of this thing called life.

How do we bring our thoughts into subjection?
Phillipians 4:8 says: …”whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
II Cor. 10:5 says “Cast down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

This does not mean that every thought will be one of roses and sunshine. We will experience dark and painful thoughts and emotions. Yet, we can make a conscious effort not to drown in the unrelenting waves that come to take us under. We can fight to the surface in an effort to breath in God’s new mercies and behold the many blessings present before us.

When was the last time you found yourself drowning in a sea of unfruitful thought?

Next time you find your thoughts in a rut, think on “things that are lovely.” Remember the good times. Count your many blessings. Do something that makes you happy. Encourage yourself. Encourage someone else. Seek help. Surround yourself with people that love and support you. Take it one day at a time. One moment at a time. And as always…….

Are You Fulfilling Your Purpose?

What is your purpose?

We often hear teenagers say they are “living their best life.” Yet, we are not truly living our best life until we are walking in our purpose! Those who have found their purpose are most likely utilizing their strengths and talents and as a result are less stressed and living more fulfilling lives.
Question-Do you want to be less stressed???
Answer-Walk in your purpose.

As you think about your purpose, ask yourself:

ho am I?
What do I value?
What are my goals?
How am I impacting others?
What do I have to contribute?
In what ways am I contributing?
Am I seeing results in my life and in the lives of others?

Once you have reflected on these questions, I challenge you to write a purpose statement (similar to a mission statement) that will guide your thoughts, actions and efforts as you strive to achieve even greater results!
